Another hot button topic among politicians today is immigration.
Politicians (and the individuals who collectively make up the United
States) take positions ranging from totally open and unrestricted
immigration to a complete and total ban on any new immigration, as
well as every conceivable position in between. In my opinion, most
politicians use the issue of immigration to consolidate support from
their core constituency, instead of using it to put forth constructive
and responsible measures to further our national interests.
I believe that immigration is one of the cornerstones on which this
great nation was established. Further, I believe that subsequent
waves of immigration have added not only to the cultural diversity of
America, but have also expanded the U.S.’s artistic, economic,
religious and athletic talent pool. This has made our nation the envy
of all others, and it is a major reason behind the drive of so many
foreigners to reach “the land of unlimited opportunities” that we call
home.
The rhetoric that I find most alarming has to do with how we deal
with illegal aliens. There are merits to the argument that that those
who enter our country illegally should not be entitled to the benefits
associated with being a U.S. citizen. There are also merits to the
argument that anyone in our country should be entitled to things like
emergency health care and the sanctity of their individual rights as
defined in our Constitution. There is a huge gray area between these
two positions. I do not believe that the average citizen realizes the
importance of wading through this gray area, and defining a public
policy that is fiscally and culturally responsible as well as morally
justifiable.
As President, my powers are derived primarily from my ability to
focus attention on domestic and international issues that I deem
important. It is Congress that is actually charged with passing the
legislation that governs our country. I am therefore using this book as
my forum for entering my opinion on illegal aliens into the public
record. While I am in favor of an open immigration policy, I believe
that an unrestricted immigration policy has disadvantages that
strongly outweigh the benefits. I also have no problem with adding
resources to our border patrols and the Coast Guard to limit the
ability of non-U.S. citizens to enter our country illegally. While all my
fellow candidates have either concrete or general immigration policy
proposals, all of the focus exclusively on immigrants from other
countries. As we move into the twentieth century, I would like to
expand the scope of our immigration policy upwards and outwards.
Being a bit of a science fiction buff, I am convinced that intelligent life
exists beyond the planet earth. My concern is that such
extraterrestrial life forms would be lumped in under the blanket
term “illegal aliens”. Let’s face it; if these space aliens are smart
enough to build a spaceship and land it on our planet, they also
surely have the technology to build a super death ray or
transmogrifier or something equally as sinister. If these aliens just
happen to land in our country*, we are opening up a dangerous can of
worms by classifying them as “illegal aliens”. Since they most likely
would not speak our language, it would be very difficult for them to
find work. If we exclude them and their offspring from programs like
basic education or job training and welfare, we would only provoke
them and run the risk of causing them to start an intergalactic
military confrontation. Despite our military superiority on this
planet, I strongly doubt that we could compete against alien military
technology.
I would use my powers as President to strongly push for an
exemption from any “illegal alien” legislation for all space aliens. This
exemption would apply universally for all space aliens, regardless of
whether they are furry, cute and cuddly or reptilian and hideously
unattractive. This policy is not only in the best interest of furthering
constructive dialogue between galaxies and species, it is also in the
best interest of ensuring that our nation does not become a slave
colony for a superior life form from beyond our planet.
*The majority of books, films and anecdotes dealing with UFOs and space aliens support the idea that they
would land in the U.S.A.
